I’m working on a way to grant access to my Plex server. This is a work in progress. The server is one of several test virtual machines running on a computer that I got from Walmart in 2009 during an end-of-year clearance, so I’m not expecting much performance from this.
Step One
Go to plex.tv and register an account (it’s free)
Step Two
Fill out the form at the bottom of the page. I know it says that it’s a comment box, but the comment is NOT going to be displayed to the public, because I have that disabled. You will see a preview of the message, but no one else will be able to see it except for me.
I will need the information in order to grant you access (I take extra security precautions).
I will need you to enter either your Plex User Account Name or the email you used to register your account. I need this information to add you as a user in my Plex Media Library.
I will also need you to include who you are and how I know you. If I don’t know your actual name, you don’t have to share it. If I only know you as your social media handle, that’s totally fine. I just need to know who the heck you are because I’m not sharing this with literally everyone, just a few people.
NOTE:
When you fill out the form, you MUST do it from the same location that you are going to be watching my media from. This is because I’m locking it down by location per user (can be more than one location). If you fill out the form on your cellphone in the middle of the park, and then try to watch it from your TV in your living room, it’s not going to work.
Step Three
Let me know when you have completed steps one and two. At this point, I’ll be able to grant you access. After that, I will send you a link that will work in a web browser, Roku, Fire Stick, etc.
Step Four
You’ll go to the link, sign in to your Plex account, and start browsing media.
I haven’t tested this on Roku, Fire Stick, AndroidTV/GoogleTV, or any other devices yet. I think the easiest way would be to access the link and sign in from your phone, tablet, or computer, and then screen cast it to your television.
